JOANNE GIARRUSSO: I've seen over the years, we used to do a lot of gum surgery. We don't do as much anymore because of the importance of flossing, tartar control toothpastes, the information to the patient that your general health is related to your mouth. And any inflammation or bleeding is not a normal condition and patients are more aware of it. The hygienist's job is to make the patient feel comfortable first because it's not a comfortable situation.
KELLY ANTOINE: One of the big benefits is that they will be prepared for the type of cleaning that they're going to need by the hygienist. They'll see the dentist, and the dentist himself is going to determine what kind of cleaning the patient is going to need. In just 45 minutes they're definitely on their way to better oral health.
