EMILE MARTIN, D.D.S.: Oral surgery includes any extractions. It can include some bone grafting. It can include some soft tissue grafting, and that crosses over between periodontology and oral surgery. Most people associate oral surgery with your implant placement, which I do or extractions, which I also do. We have the opportunity to do a lot of third molar cases, everything from routine third molar extractions to full bony impactions. The use of IV sedation has made it possible to do many cases. Many patients that are concerned about having the third molar extraction under just local, and the sedation's a great technique. It's not a general. They don't lose the gag reflex. They don't know, don't care, and most important don't remember about the procedure being done. It's really a wonderful adjunct.

WE use IV sedation both for oral surgery predominantly, but there are cases where we'll do general dentistry for patients that are dental phobics who are not able have their dentistry done under just local anesthetic.
