EMILE MARTIN, D.D.S.: I got into implant dentistry in 1986. I took a three-year program at University of Pennsylvania once a month, the continuing education program. There is no specialty in implant dentistry at this time, and my background and training has to do with doing both the surgical aspect as well as the prosthetic or the tooth part of it, which is what people really come for.

In most cases in most communities, implant dentistry is performed as a two-stage type of procedure. The implant goes in, you wait a few months, and then someone makes a tooth for you. It depends upper or lower is a little different. The new technology on the surfaces are different, but in my case, my training provides me the opportunity to place and restore the implant. And that's a little different from what most people will find in the community where the general dentist or the prosthodontist will send the patient to an oral surgeon, a periodontist, have them place the implant. Then they'll go back to someone else. Again, it's back to the comprehensive care in one location and one possibility, and that's what we're able to do here so I provide that.

I have a fellowship with the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. I have a diploma in the American Board of Oral Implantology, and I'm past president of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry so it's a big part of what I do. And the ability to restore a patient's smile and functionality is, in today's world, it's a tremendous time to be in dentistry period.
