EMILE MARTIN, D.D.S.: Porcelain veneers are for people who have a color change that they need that can't be done with bleaching. Many times the bleach will bring out the vitality of the tooth, make it look brighter. In many cases, it's not really a shade change, but it just looks brighter. With the veneer if you need a change, then the veneer is the way to go if there's nothing else that's wrong with the tooth. It can be for anyone who's 16 to 85, and we've done both.
It's a conservative technique mostly. It can be done as a reversible technique if it's, we don't have to take tooth structure away, and that can be either done with bonding materials or with the actual porcelain laminates. The porcelain laminate is a better choice for long term. It won't absorb any materials. It won't change shade. But for a younger person, sometimes it's not financially feasible for them to do that so it's an alternative to carry them down the road.
